Unit number: XPS
309
Unit title: Ego,
Archetype and the Religious Psyche
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This unit is a Jungian study of individuation, which is the mature person’s path towards becoming psychologically whole. In this process the ego is brought into balance with the Self, which is the central organizer of the whole psyche. The textbook author, Edward Edinger, explains the stages of individuation in terms of the search for meaning through the symbolism of religion, art, dreams and myth. Religious symbols are made understood using secular concepts, giving renewed meaning to Christian symbolism. Edinger’s thesis is that the modern search for the self equates to the discovery of God. The problems of the inflated and the alienated ego are also discussed at length in this profound study of human consciousness.
Key textbook: Edinger, Edward F. Ego and Archetype: Individuation and the Religious Function of the Psyche. Shambhala Publications, 1991. [Previously published by Penguin Books, 1973, 1974, 1980] This unit is available for occasional study. For further details of our occasional study scheme click here.
