Unit number: XPS
211
Unit title: Psychosis
and Spirituality
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: There are obvious parallels between psychosis and spirituality – in both, ordinary rationality no longer applies and barriers of ordinary life and behaviour seem to break down. However, conventional thinking does not make these connections explicit. This unit introduces a new multidisciplinary perspective within which to explore the distinctions and common ground between psychosis and spirituality. Topics include schizotypy, findings from neuropsychology, psychosis and mysticism, and CBT for psychosis and religious delusions. The set textbook comprises a collection of papers by highly regarded workers in the field, which include some accounts of personal experiences.
Key textbook: Clarke, Isabel. Psychosis and Spirituality: Exploring the New Frontier. London: Whurr Publishers, 2001.
