Unit number: THT
106
Unit title: Bereavement:
Coping with Practical tasks
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This unit offers a guide to the practicalities of dealing with a death: handling the formal tasks, the funeral arrangements, and religious ceremony or equivalent; informing those known to the deceased and disposal of personal effects; the will and financial matters; and special circumstances such as the death of a child, suicide, organ donation and non-availability of the body. Where laws and customs are mentioned, the set text is UK-based and focused on Christian and/or non-religious mourners. However, much of the contents of this unit might be of interest to those concerned with burying the dead and helping the bereaved in other countries and in diverse religious and ethnic communities, as well as in the case of interfaith relationships where one partner had died. This unit will be of interest to students of religion, counseling, social studies, thanatology, and to all helping professionals.
Key textbook: Clayton, Shelagh. After a Death: Practical Problems and Sensible Solutions. London: Robson Books, 1996.
