Unit title: Death
and Bereavement: An Interdisciplinary Approach
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: There are many courses on death and dying which are aimed at those involved in bereavement counselling. This course provides additional knowledge of psychological, religious and cultural aspects of death and dying, and takes an interdisciplinary approach. Topics include: the nature of death, death in Western and monotheistic faiths, reincarnation and rebirth, ancestor veneration in Chinese & Japanese culture, African, Afro-Caribbean and Jewish beliefs & customs, funeral rites, new religions and death, ethics of reburial, death in Freud and Jung, Shakespeare and death, stages of dying, care for the dying, basics of bereavement, special issues in bereavement, children and death, suicide and euthanasia, death of a pet, studying the bereaved, near-death experiences, significance of death.
