Unit number: SMC
310
Unit title: Secret
Science of Huna
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: The Huna tradition is the shamanic, healing and magical system of the ancient Polynesians, which flourished in Hawaii until driven underground and almost destroyed by colonialists and missionaries. This unit is a study of the seminal work by Max Freedom Long, “The Secret Science behind Miracles”, first published in 1948 and still in print. Long came to Hawaii in 1917 and soon began gathering the lore of Hawaii’s secret traditions before they disappeared. His published works and records remain one of the main sources of Huna knowledge today. “The Secret Science behind Miracles” is a comprehensive study of Huna psychology, spirituality, magic, and healing and shamanic practices, with erudite and comparative commentary.
Key textbook: Long, Max Freedom. The Secret Science Behind Miracles: Unveiling the Huna Tradition of the Ancient Polynesians. Marina del Rey, California: DeVorss Publications, 1948 (latest printing 2000).
