Unit number:     RIS 418

Unit title:           Indian Philosophy

Credit value:      3 credits

Description:        Many people have studied some Indian philosophy as part of yoga, Indian mysticism or religion. However, it is a misconception that Indian philosophy is wholly mystical and sacred rather than rational. This unit provides a non-sectarian concise introduction to and overview of “classical” Indian philosophical and religious thought that will provide new understandings for people interested in the subject whatever their background. Subjects included are cosmic beginnings, karma and rebirth, the way of the Buddha, later developments in Buddhism, the role of language and grammar, dharma and the Vedas, Yoga and Samkhya, Sankara’s Advaita Vedanta.

Key textbook:   Hamilton. Sue.  Indian Philosophy: A Very Short Introduction. Oxford University Press, 2001.
