Religious Ideas: Buddhism to Christianity

Credit value:      4 credits 

Description:         This is the second unit in a three-unit series exploring the landmark scholarship of Professor Mircea Eliade as expressed in his global, three-volume opus, “A History of Religious Ideas.” This unit brings to life the development of religious thought in ancient China; early philosophy of Brahmanism and Hinduism; the origins and development of Buddhism; Roman and Northern European pagan religion;  Greek and Hellenistic religion and philosophy; Developments in Buddhism; Jainism; The Mahabharata and the Bhagavad Gita; Judaism from the Babylonian Exile to the encounters with Hellenism; Hellenistic mystery religions; Persian religion and Mithraism; Jesus of Nazareth and the beginnings of Christianity; The influence of Gnosticism; and the crisis of the Church during the Second Century.

Prerequisites:     Some reading of the previous volume of A History of Religious Ideas (see below) is desirable.
