Description: This is the first unit in a three-unit series exploring the landmark scholarship of Professor Mircea Eliade as expressed in his global, three-volume opus, “A History of Religious Ideas.” This unit examines prehistoric religious art and symbolism; Neolithic religions; Mesopotamian religions; Religious ideas of Ancient Egypt; Megaliths and ceremonial centres; Hittite and Canaanite religion; the ancient Israelites; Vedic religion before Buddhism; Zeus and the Greek gods; the Eleusinian mysteries; Zarathustra and Mazdaism; The Kings and Prophets of ancient Israel; and the rites of Dionysus.
