Unit number: RIS
404
Unit title: God,
Sex, and Women of the Bible
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: Feminist voices are now being heard within both Judaism and Christianity, seeking to enhance the role of women within these great religions. The present study looks at eight key women in the Old Testament and casts a fresh look at their stories, looking beyond the patriarchal stances taken by orthodox religion. The text author finds in these stories of Biblical women strong evidence of a pragmatic matriarchal spirituality that existed alongside the patriarchal traditions of Abraham, Isaac and Moses. The unit will examine what the stories of these Biblical matriarchs can reveal about women’s sexuality, relationship with God, motherhood, leadership, bereavement, and old age. The key text is written from a Jewish point of view but is accessible to all faiths.
Key textbook: Labowitz, Shoni. God, Sex and Women of the Bible. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1998.
