Unit number: RIS
309
Unit title: Biblical
Counselling
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This unit is intended for Christian students who would like an introduction to Bible-based counselling, or for non-Christian professionals who would like to understand how a Bible-based approach to counseling might work. The key textbook considers how Christianity and psychology can work together to yield an approach to counseling emphasising the Bible but acknowledging the insights of psychologists. A Christian view of personality theory is given, and how to deal with problems from a Christian standpoint is explained. The unit also contains models of how to develop a counselling programme in the local Christian community. The Christian standpoint promoted in the set text is Evangelical. This unit has been issued in response to requests by Christian students. Please note, however, that CIU is not a Christian or Evangelical university and its units include secular, holistic and interfaith approaches.
Key textbook: Crabb Jr., Lawrence J., Effective Biblical Counseling. Grand Rapids, Michigan: Zondervan Publishing, 1977.
