Unit number: RIS
307
Unit title: Sufi,
Buddhist and Jewish Meditation
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This course explores a spiritual memoir by an unconventional rabbi who spent more than 15 years delving deeply into the spiritual and meditative practices of three faiths: Sufism, Buddhism and Judaism. This eclectic yet universal spiritual journey reveals how the treasures of mysticism can be reached regardless of outer religious belief. The student will enjoy accounts of visions and deeply mystical experiences; spiritual lore and legend; details of physical and inner travel; and a profound sense of mystery as the rabbi discovers and renews his spiritual roots at the same time as finding that the search for “Awareness”, the ultimate nature of existence, transcends the outer cloak of religion.
Key textbook: Cooper, David A. Three Gates to Meditation Practice: A Personal Journey into Sufism, Buddhism and Judaism. Woodstock, Vermont: Skylight Paths Publishing, 2000.
