and Practices of Buddhism

Description: This unit offers a comprehensive introduction to the life and teachings of the Buddha and the many schools and movements that make up the diversity of Buddhism today. Basic teachings and practices are outlined and the modern development of Buddhism in Asia and in the West is covered, and there is a section on Buddhism and psychotherapy. The key text is written in an accessible style and no prior knowledge of Buddhism is required. Resources are given for students interested in discovering more about particular branches of Buddhism or contacting a local Buddhist centre. Those who are already practising one form of Buddhism may use this course to learn how their particular movement relates to Buddhism as a whole.
