Unit number: RIS 227
Unit title: Jews,
God and History
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This unit tells the story of the Jewish people interwoven with the history of civilization wherever Jews have lived. The history of the Hebrews and the Jews is presented from Biblical times to the present day. The student will learn about the Jews at the time of the Epicurean Greeks, the rise of Christianity, Talmudic culture of the Babylonian exile, Jews and the coming of Islam, the Golden Age of Islam, the conversion of the Khazars, the Jews in the Middle Ages, the systematic development of anti-Semitism, the Jews of America, the Holocaust, and the establishment of the State of Israel. Contributions of Jews to world culture and spirituality in all ages are noted, and in the set text the Jews can be seen to hold up a mirror to the rest of the world, as the best and the worst of other cultures is revealed by how they interact with the Jewish people. Time lines make it easy to see the key events in Jewish and World history at a glance.
