Unit title: Comparative
Concepts of God
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This unit examines the concepts of God as expounded by philosophers within five traditional religions. Topics cover: Vedantic philosophy (Advaita Vedanta), Ramanuja’s Non-Dualism, Buddhist analogues to God; God in the Old Testament; The Jewish God according to Maimonides; Al-Ghazzali and the Islamic conception of God, and Thomas Aquinas and Subsistent Being. The unit also discusses the Dual-Aspect Doctrine of God (which can be found in every major religion) and the question of faith versus reason. c
Prerequisites: Previous in-depth study of at least two religions, and some knowledge of philosophy, is strongly preferred. This unit is not for the beginner.

Important bibliographical note: This book also appeared with an alternative title of “Images of Eternity” (Oneworld, 1987, 1993). The edition bearing that title is suitable for studying this unit, and can be found on the used book market e.g. via www.abebooks.com / www.abebooks.co.uk However, please do not confuse this book with another book by the same author called “The Concept of God”. Students whose first language is not English should pay careful attention to the difference between the two titles: “The Concept” [singular] does not mean “Concepts” [plural].
