Unit number: RIS
209
Unit title: What
is Theology?
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: In the words of the author of the key text for this introduction to theology, the subject “deals with questions of meaning, truth, beauty and practice raised in relation to religions and pursued through a range of academic disciplines”. Traditionally, though, Theology has been the exploration of Christian concepts and values – other religions tend not to use the term theology. These concepts and values form the framework of this broad-minded course, which introduces, from a modern academic perspective, different aspects of Christian thought, belief, philosophy and ethics. This unit is aimed at non-Christians who wish to gain an understanding of the unity and diversity of Christianity, and at Christians who wish to sample academic thinking concerning various aspects of the Christian faith. This unit encourages free intellectual enquiry and does not attempt to convert anyone to Christianity.
Key textbook: Ford, David F. Theology: A Very Short Introduction. Oxford University Press, 1999.
