Unit title:           The Phenomenon of Religion

Credit value:      7.5 credits 

Description:       Providing a thorough grounding in multidisciplinary religious studies, this unit enquires into the role of religion in both the traditional and the modern worlds.  The text examines three main aspects of religion drawing from all major traditions and also from the perspective of other disciplines such as psychology, sociology and psychology. The three main aspects of religion presented here are: religious experience and expression, concepts of religion, and religion in society.  Some key topics covered are: faith, belief and conversion; sacrifice, suffering and salvation; fundamentalism versus liberalism; gender issues; the history of religions; and the role of religion in today’s world. Extensive notes, glossary, Internet references and bibliography are provided.

No specific religious conviction is necessary in order to study and enjoy this unit, and those of any faith or none are welcome. It is open to all who seek a wider and deeper understanding of the role of religion in society and its history and development.
