Unit number: REG
355
Unit title: Reincarnation
in Science, Religion and Society
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: The subject of reincarnation fascinates many. Far from being just a “New Age” fad or a Hindu and Buddhist belief, the concept of reincarnation can be found in many religions and traditions and also in the work of many Western writers and thinkers. This unit brings together studies of rebirth belief in various religions and traditions; views of writers, psychologists and philosophers on reincarnation; ideas of some famous figures who believed in reincarnation; social thinking on how a model of the soul’s progression through many lifetimes can solve major social problems; and case histories of past-life recall focusing on the research of Dr. Ian Stevenson. The unit also features related parapsychological issues, hypnotic regression, and children’s issues.
Key textbook: Cranston, Sylvia and Williams, Carey. Reincarnation: A New Horizon in Science, Religion and Society. Pasadena, California: Theosophical University Press, 1984, 1993.
