Unit number: REG
211
Unit title: Jungian
Past Life Therapy
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This course is an intellectually demanding introduction to the past life therapy and accompanying transpersonal philosophy of Jungian psychotherapist Roger Woolger Ph.D. The concepts of reincarnation and past lives are introduced from many angles, and the psychotherapist’s approach to past lives emerges as a new way of exploring regression involving altered states. Case histories are presented, and some topics considered include the role of the body, the philosophy of karma, sexual and reproductive problems, and the possibility of life after death.
Aims of this course:
1. To provide an overview of a Jungian approach to past life therapy.
2. To show how the exploration of past lives and the philosophy of karma can be part of a modern transpersonal therapy which includes a focus on the body.
3. To present a number of relevant case studies.
4. To review the cultural history of reincarnation in the West.
5. To demonstrate how sexual problems and other problems may have their origins in past lives.
6. To consider the wheel of death and (re)birth in the light of past life therapy.
Key textbook: Woolger, Roger. Other Lives, Other Selves: A Jungian Psychotherapist Discovers Past Lives. New York: Dolphin/Doubleday 1987; London: Crucible 1990; other later editions exist.
