Unit number: PSY
692
Unit title: Multiple
Personality with Imaginary Languages
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: Here we present a fascinating study of a 19th century parapsychological phenomenon, the mediumship of Hélène Smith, as studied by the contemporary psychologist Flournoy, who ranks alongside key figures such as Freud, Jung and Myers. Smith claimed to be able to visit beings on Mars, to be a reincarnation of Marie Antoinette and also of a 15th century Hindu princess. This critical study is an important landmark in the study of dynamic psychiatry, personality, the unconscious (or subconscious mind), altered states of consciousness and parapsychology. The material is relevant to today’s popular interest in past life regression and channeling and to the clinical study of dissociated states. This course is also important for the history of psychology.
This course will be of interest to students of: psychology, transpersonal psychology, parapsychology, psychical research, religion, contemporary spirituality, history, hypnotherapy, consciousness studies, regression and reincarnation studies, feminism, sociolinguistics.
Key textbook: Flournoy, Theodore. "From India to the Planet Mars" Princeton University Press 1994. With Introduction by Sonu Shamdasani.
We find that the Princeton edition is out of print though it is available cheaply secondhand from many booksellers listed on www.abebooks.com An edition of the book is available as a rare reprint from Kessinger – www.kessinger-publishing.com for US $ 38.95
