Mutism in Children
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: Selective mutism (originally called elective mutism) is fear of speaking, a condition in which a child talks willingly in some situations but refuses to talk in others. Over the past 10 years, this condition has generated a great deal of research. The unit looks at the background to the condition, its development and possible causes, selective mutism in an educational context, assessment and intervention, non-behavioural and behavioural approaches, and research.
