Unit title: Paraphilias
and Pediatric Aetiology
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: Paraphilias are unusual sexual behaviours. Some remain widely regarded as perversions and are illegal. Certain other practices involving consensual behaviour amongst adults are often tolerated in modern society as fringe behaviours. What is regarded as legal and tolerable may differ from country to country and (in the US) between one state and another. This unit presents the development of concepts of paraphilia from early psychological theory to contemporary perspectives, John Money’s concept of the “lovemap”, seven clinical case studies (taken from the files of the Johns Hopkins Psychohormonal Research Unit) illustrating the childhood aetiology of paraphilia, a discussion of the developmental factors involved in paraphilia, and hypotheses on how paraphilias are generated. No previous study of the topic is necessary as the necessary background, history and concepts are introduced to new students.
Prerequisites: Students must have at least a Bachelor's degree or equivalent and a professional helping or forensic qualification e.g. doctor, nurse, psychotherapist, psychologist, counsellor, lawyer, police officer, corrections or probation officer. Proof of professional qualification and/or status must be sent with application. This unit is not available to the general public.
