Unit number: PSY
407
Unit title: Trauma,
Psychotherapy and the Body
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This unit bridges the gap between talking therapy for psychological trauma and PTSD and body-oriented therapy. It shows that memories of trauma are held in the brain and the body, leading to the classic symptoms of PTSD. The text provides an overview of post-traumatic stress disorder and the psychology of memory, acting as an introduction to newcomers to the field and as a refresher for advanced students. The unit goes on to look at trauma and memory in detail and gives guidelines for successful therapy, including techniques for verbal therapy which make use of the latest information about somatic coding of trauma and which offer a body-conscious approach without touching the client. Sample therapy transcripts are provided for the clinician.
Key textbook: Rothschild, Babette. The Body Remembers: The Psychophysiology of Trauma and Trauma Treatment. New York & London: W.W. Norton & Company, 2000.
