Unit number: PSY 406
Unit title: The
Undiscovered Mind
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This unit takes a sceptical and critical view of the achievements of psychology, neuroscience, psychoanalysis and other mind sciences, and maintains that despite all their findings and theories, the mind (or brain) is essentially too complex for us to understand, and there will probably never be a complete scientific theory of the mind. The text is by a journalist of science, who in the course of his research, interviewed various people involved in mind sciences. The topics treated in the text include neuroscience, Freudianism, psychotherapy, Prozac, genes and the mind, evolutionary psychology, artificial intelligence and consciousness. In the book, some of the “sacred cows” of psychology are challenged. This unit is meant for those who already know some general psychology and are keenly interested in current debates about the mind. The unit will stimulate the student’s ability to question the findings of research and the conclusions of scientific reductionism.
Key textbook: Horgan, John. The Undiscovered Mind: How the Brain Defies Explanation. London: Weidenfeld and Nicholson, 1999.
