Psychopathology
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: All workers in fields relating to mental health need to have some acquaintance with how abnormal and altered states of mind are recognised, diagnosed, described and classified. Such abnormal states include common syndromes such as anxiety and panic, psychotic conditions such as schizophrenia, conditions relating to the use of drugs and alcohol, disorders of thinking, speech and perception possibly related to brain damage, and other forms of mental illness. Doctors, psychiatrists, mental health nurses and registered/licensed clinical psychologists will study psychopathology as part of their professional training. Other helping professionals and health workers (especially in the private sector) may well lack systematic study of psychopathology, and this course exists to fill that need. The course, using a text by an eminent professor of psychiatry, has introductory sections explaining the basic concepts of mental illness and how psychiatrists look for symptoms and make their diagnoses. There are chapters relating to each of the major groups of recognised mental disorders, explaining very clearly the symptoms, their implications, and other background knowledge about each condition, including relevant theory and research.
