Unit number:     PSY 367

Unit title:          The Myth of Repressed Memory

Credit value:      3 credits

Description:        Recovered memory of child abuse is a controversial topic. This unit centers around case histories of accusations of abuse stemming from recovered memory. The text author, a clinical psychologist, carried out extensive literature research to throw light on the claims made in such cases. The unit seeks to answer such questions as: how do “recovered” memories of abuse arise? Can we trust those memories?  What does the psychology of memory say about the problem?  How does the adversarial process and the methods used by therapists influence perception of the past? Are there really epidemics of bizarre abuse, and are there witch-hunts of people accused of abuse on unfounded evidence?  Are people who claim that memories of abuse are false always right?

Key textbook:    Loftus, Elizabeth and Ketcham, Katherine.  The Myth of Repressed Memory: False Memories and Allegations of Sexual Abuse.  New York: St. Martin’s Press, 1994.  NOTE: This important book is currently out of print but widely available second-hand.
