Unit title: Abnormal
Psycholoy Series II
Credit value: 16 credits (Occasional students taking this block will need to pay for three full units. This series must be taken together and cannot be taken as single units).
Description: Abnormal Psychology Series 2 is a complete introduction to and overview of abnormal psychology in six units (total 16 credits). Careful study of this series will lay the groundwork for further advanced and specialised studies in areas of abnormal psychology, or provide a comprehensive acquaintance with the field on its own.
Prerequisite: Some understanding of psychology and prior reading of university-level psychology texts is preferred.
Key textbook: Davison, Gerald C., Neale, John M. and Kring, Ann M. Abnormal Psychology (Ninth Edition). John Wiley & Sons, inc. 2004. The textbook has 648 large pages plus lengthy glossary, appendices and bibliography and is the equivalent of studying a number of smaller textbooks. Most students on psychology degree courses might buy this book and use parts of it or use it occasionally, not making use of its full potential. However, by using as much of it as possible and working through it systematically, the student gains the equivalent of many hours of lectures by highly qualified professors.
When buying the book, please do not confuse the yellow covered “Cram 101” Textbook Outlines, with the same title, with the textbook itself. The “Cram 101” series of notes, based on the full textbooks, is mainly for students at mainstream universities facing conventional exams, and is unsuitable on its own for this Calamus series, though it might help you to study the subject on your own.
