Unit number: PSY
306
Unit title: Psychology
of Criminal Conduct
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This unit is a study of how the science of psychology has contributed to the understanding of criminal behaviour and how it can be controlled. Crime and antisocial behaviour are complex problems involving psychological, social, environmental, legal and ethical factors. The key text introduces a number of perspectives on crime and offending. Introductory chapters cover an overview of the field and how crime is measured and offenders classified. Social/environmental, psychological and biological theories of crime are then presented. Further material includes the role of the family, characteristics of offenders, aggression and violence, mental disorder, and sexual offending. The procedures of forensic psychology are introduced and the unit continues to look at how psychologists interact with and/or treat offenders. There is a final discussion on the efficacy and ethics of intervention.
Prerequisite: Some understanding of psychology and prior reading of university-level psychology texts is preferred.
Key textbook: Blackburn, Ronald. The Psychology of Criminal Conduct; Theory, Research and Practice. Chichester & New York: John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 1993 (reprinted in paperback 2001; many reprints in between those dates.)
