Description: Those coming to the academic study of traumatic memory and memory of abuse need a fair-minded, authoritative and balanced guide through the minefield of controversial claims, counterclaims, and sensationalism that has attended this topic. Such guidance is provided by the key textbook for this unit. Topics include: the debate concerning “false memory syndrome”; the psychology of memory; the unique features of traumatic memory; traumatic forgetting (repression, dissociation and denial); verification and corroboration; guidelines for therapy and recovery; legal issues; memory and trauumatic stress; spirituality and memory. A set of appendices provides useful papers for students covering some additional psychological and forensic issues.
