Unit number: PSY 209
Unit title: The
Nurture Assumption
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: Based on a study of the controversial book by Judith Rich Harris, this course re-examines the nature-nurture controversy and the time-honoured principles that genetics and/or parenting determine our character and behaviour. Harris’s work reveals a third influence: children’s own peer cultures have a hitherto unacknowledged major role in socialization and in forming the character of the adult, and this role could be the predominant one.
Key textbook: Harris, Judith Rich. The Nurture Assumption: Why Children Turn Out the Way They Do. London: Bloomsbury, 1998.
