Unit number: PMG
219
Unit title: The
Highly Sensitive Person
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: It is estimated that 20% of people have an extra-sensitive nervous system. This quality can give people enhanced mental and intuitive abilities but also leads to social stresses and difficulties. Only recently has the study of highly sensitive traits become popular. This unit focuses on a text by Elaine N. Aron, Jungian psychotherapist and pioneer of HSP (Highly Sensitive Person) research. Here we are introduced to the characteristics of HSPs, their lifestyles, their particular stresses, their strategies for coping in relationships and at work, their physical and emotional health and their spirituality. This unit will help anyone who is an HSP or who lives or works with one or teaches HSPs. Helping professionals also need to know how HSPs are different and how they can best be approached.
Key textbook: Aron, Elaine N. The Highly Sensitive Person: How to Thrive When the World Overwhelms You. London: Thorsons, 1999.
