Unit number: PMG
215
Unit title: Control
Anger the Cognitive Way
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This unit presents techniques for anger control that can be used as a self-help programme and that can also be useful to counselors, psychotherapists, hypnotherapists, teachers and helping professionals. The techniques are grounded in Rational-Emotive Behavioural Therapy (REBT) and Cognitive Therapy. The unit also looks at the philosophical inspiration of anger control and the debate about whether therapy clients should be encouraged to vent feelings through catharsis and whether the process of catharsis really helps. The key textbook, written by an authority in the field, is clearly written in an accessible style for the reader without knowledge of psychology. The textbook is suitable for recommending to clients and for use as the basis of discussion groups, adult education classes, etc.
Key textbook: Ellis, Albert and Tafrate, Raymond Chip. How to Control Your Anger Before it Controls You. London: Robert Hale, 1999. [The UK edition may be out of print but a US edition published by Citadel Press is available.]
