Unit number: PMG 109
Unit title: Guide
to Successful Elderhood
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: As more people are living rewarding and productive lives in what used to be known as retirement age, the study of healthy and positive aging has become an important part of developmental psychology and personal growth. This unit looks at transforming the traditional "declining" view of old age into a positive time of life when people can keep growing, learning and self-actualising, living successful and fulfilling lives as they grow from midlife to elderhood. Practical guidelines are given for managing the transition from midlife to elderhood, and issues of spirituality, death and immortality are discussed. This unit will be of value to all involved with psychology, counselling, personal growth, coaching, self-development and social studies, as well as those involved with caring for the elderly and/or with aging parents.
Key textbook: Murphy, John S. and Hudson, Frederick M. The Joy of Old: A Guide to Successful Elderhood. Altadena, California: Geode Press 1995
