Frederick Myers and Survival

Description: This unit studies the classic work of 19th-century psychical researcher Frederick Myers, in an abridged edition edited by his son L H Myers and recently republished. Drawing from Myers' years of investigations into altered states of consciousness and the paranormal, the key text discusses disturbed personalities, genius, sleep, hypnosis, automatism, appearances of the dead, and trance states, building up to a strong hypothesis of survival of the personality after death. This unit will be of interest to students of hypnosis, abnormal psychology, parapsychology, Spiritualism, the New Age, psychical research, shamanism, consciousness studies and related fields.

Notes on editions of key text:
Originally Myers' work was published in the late 19th century in two volumes of about 700 pages each. The work was then abridged and edited by his son, Leopold Hamilton Myers, for a popular edition first published in 1907, and it is that edition which has been reprinted since by various publishers.
You may find editions other than the Hampton Roads edition in libraries, secondhand bookshops, or on Internet auctions. You may also be lucky enough to find a secondhand set of the original two volumes. This unit has been prepared using the 1907 edition. All references are to chapters rather than page numbers, making the material easy to find regardless of which abridged edition is used.
