Unit number: PAR 226
Unit title:
Paranormal Espionage
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This unit looks at the fascinating history of the military applications of psychic research – which may be called “ESPionage”. Today this branch of paranormal research includes remote viewing as well as other modern uses of psychic abilities in the service of the military, defence and espionage. However, in recorded history there are examples of magic, mysticism and religion pressed into service to support military or clandestine aims. These include using local beliefs and superstitions as part of psychological warfare and propaganda. The textbook author, himself a former soldier and remote viewer, surveys the use of psychic and mystical powers from Biblical and medieval times, through occultism and Nazi pseudoscience, to the activities of the CIA, the Russians and the Chinese. This wide-ranging study attempts to understand the context of the ESPionage phenomenon of whatever culture and period, sifting superstition from fact, and including many fascinating characters.
Key textbook: Mandelbaum, W. Adam, The Psychic Battlefield: Behind the Lines of Paranormal ESPionage. 2000, London, Vision Paperbacks.
