Unit number: MET
207
Unit title: Imagination,
Ancient Myth and Depth Psychology
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This unit offers a study of The Philosophers’ Secret Fire: A History of the Imagination by Patrick Harpur. This unit is about the banished visionary tradition which will not be denied and continues to subvert our rational consciousness. Harpur traces the tradition of the Golden Chain of alchemy or the philosophers’ fire down the ages and studies myths of spirits, gods and daimonic reality. He shows how imagination is the key to unlocking the wisdom, mystery and enchantment which our modern rationalist and materialistic world has denied and forgotten. We have become estranged from ourselves because of the constraints put upon our imagination and ways of thinking, and this book shows us ways of discovering our true selves.
