Unit title:         Financial Accounting for Managers

Credit value:     3 credits

Description:      This unit provides a comprehensive manager-level course in understanding and using financial information at work, using the framework of  self study, assignments, and course work. This unit is suitable as an undergraduate introductory course for business management students or as a postgraduate management course for non-financial based students. Topics covered in the unit include the following;

1. Introduction to financial statements
2. Understanding the balance sheet and using it for decision making.
3. Using the income statement to understand business performance.
4. Understanding and using the cash flow statement and how it differs from the income statement.
5. Understanding and interpreting financial statements.
6. Understanding different systems of accounting including budgets, cost accounting and tax accounting.
7. Understanding and using financial indicators to analyse the financial health of an organization.

This unit will be of interest to managers, investors, sales personnel, technical based employees, entrepreneurs, and students who want to know how to understand financial statements to their advantage in the course of their work.

No previous knowledge of accounting is necessary but the student should be familiar with reading fairly technical literature and working from textbooks, e.g. in mathematics, finance  or business management.
