Unit number: LIB
278
Unit title: Ancient
Philosophy
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: In the 6th century BCE, in several Greek city-states, certain individuals became known for arguments and reasoning about the world, nature and the universe. They began a tradition of thinking known as philosophy. Socrates, Plato, Aristotle and Pythagoras are probably the best-recognised ancient philosophers. Philosophy split into various schools of thought and the ideas of Plato and Pythagoras were being studied until the second century CE. As Christianity became more established in the Roman Empire, Platonism had a great influence on Christian thought. Later Christian thinking, from Augustine onwards, began to diverge significantly from the approaches of ancient Greek philosophy. This unit provides a brief overview of ancient philosophical thinking and an introduction to some of its key figures, and examines how we can approach ancient philosophy today.
Key textbook: Annas, Julia. Ancient Philosophy: A Very Short Introduction. Oxford University Press, 2000.
