Unit number: LIB
276
Unit title: History
of Philosophy
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: Although the ancient Greek philosophers are the most well-known in the West, abstract thought and the search for deep wisdom developed rapidly across the world between the 6th and 4th centuries BCE and have continued ever since, in both religious and secular forms. This unit provides an overview and history of philosophical thought from ancient times to the present, focusing on Western thinkers but also mentioning the development of Indian, Chinese, Persian, Jewish, Christian, and Muslim thought. The key text is organised according to four dimensions: ancient philosophy, religious and medieval philosophy, modern philosophy and the enlightenment, and the twentieth century.
Key textbook: Solomon, Robert C. and Higgins, Kathleen M., A Short History of Philosophy. Oxford University Press, 1996.
