Unit title: The
Language of Twentieth-Century Poetry
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This course studies examples of poetry spanning the twentieth century according to linguistic themes and language patterns, using extracts from famous and less known poets. The linguistic themes examined are various styles of English; spoken language; the sound of poetry; word forms and combinations; word choice & meaning; grammatical techniques and textual cohesion. Students will thus grow to identify and appreciate various writing techniques, which will help when either composing or analysing verse. Particular attention is paid throughout to dialect, slang, ethnic and colloquial expressions which lend atmosphere to a poem. Students are shown, by example, how to analyse a poem, and as part of the assessment the student is given a choice of analysing a favourite twentieth-century poem or writing a poem influenced by the techniques learned.
