Unit number: HYP
252
Unit title: Existential
Hypnotherapy
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This unit explains an approach to hypnotherapy rooted in the philosophy of existentialism, which highlights freedom and self-responsibility. The unit comments on Ericksonian hypnotherapy, NLP and Gestalt therapy from the standpoint of existentialism, and presents the work of the key text authors, illustrated by a variety of case studies. Topics include an introduction to existentialism, anxiety, the meaning of symptoms, metaphors in existential therapy, and addiction. Please note this unit is not a course in hypnotherapy and prior knowledge of the subject is desired.
Prerequisites: Some previous knowledge of hypnotherapy and trance induction is strongly preferred, as is some previous acquaintance with Ericksonian hypnosis. Alternatively, the student may do additional reading on those topics.
Key textbook: King, Mark E. and Citrenbaum, Charles M. Existential Hypnotherapy. New York & London, The Guilford Press, 1993.
Comments:
This unit is not in itself a training or qualification in hypnotherapy.
Amendments may be made to the details and provision of units at any time.
