Unit title: The
Ten Commandments in Everyday Life
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This unit presents a modern appreciation of the Biblical Ten Commandments, which have formed the basis of Judeo-Christian as well as Western secular ethics. The textbook used is authored by media personality Dr Laura Schlessinger and Rabbi Stewart Vogel. Together, they offer a lively and up-to-date discussion of the meaning of each Commandment as a guide to correct action in modern life, as well as its philosophy and wisdom. Although the textbook authors are Jewish, key differences between Jewish and Christian traditions and interpretations are pointed out, making this study useful to those involved in increasing interfaith understanding. No previous knowledge of Judaism, Christianity or the Old Testament is necessary to study this unit.
Key textbook: Schlessinger, Dr Laura and Vogel, Rabbi Stewart. The Ten Commandments: The Significance of God’s Laws in Everyday Life. HarperCollins / Cliff Street Books 1998.
