Unit number: CSP
311
Unit title: Spiritual
Awakenings in America
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This unit is a study of the history and development of alternative folk culture and spirituality in America, from the earliest days of colonisation when religious trends were imported from Europe, gradually taking on a uniquely American style, up to the present day. This "shadow culture" ran alongside the orthodox religious establishment, sometimes blending in seamlessly. Altered states of consciousness were common and notable figures within this stream of religious creativity embraced practices of two or more faiths with ease. These movements influenced humanistic and transpersonal psychology.
