Unit title: Kundalini
– Awakening of Evolutionary Energy
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: The Kundalini is a name given in yogic tradition to a channel of spiritual energy which is difficult and perilous to awaken. This unit studies the classic account by Gopi Krishna (born in 1903) - a man living an ordinary Indian life who underwent a spontaneous awakening of the Kundalini force. The student will learn of Krishna’s experiences of mental and emotional turmoil, physical suffering and altered states of consciousness en route to the unfolding of a higher transformation of consciousness. Krishna presents this rare experience as a biological as well as a spiritual phenomenon, and his work (first published in 1967) anticipates some of the current writings on the phenomenon of “spiritual emergence” (sometimes called “spiritual emergency”).
