Unit number: CSP
304
Unit title: The
Indigenous Mind in Contemporary Culture
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This course questions the thinking at the heart of Western “civilized” society, by providing us the opportunity to study the inspiring work of a Native American writer who introduces us to another mode of thinking more in tune with the universe – what he calls “primal” thought. By presenting a synthesis of Native American wisdom, story and reflections on the world’s problems and hopes, the textbook author urges us to reexamine and respect “primal” teachings. A “Primal Manifesto”, containing ethical, ecological, spiritual and social principles, is offered as a gift to the “civilized” world in celebration of diversity.
Key textbook: Horn, Gabriel (White Deer of Autumn), Contemplations of a Primal Mind. Novato, CA: New World Library, 1996.
