Unit number: CSP
111
Unit title: Origins
and Development of New Age Spirituality
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This unit studies the origins, historical influences and progression of the New Age, from its beginnings in the eighteenth century with Swedenborg to the present day, showing how ideas developed through breakthroughs in psychology, philosophy and the transpersonal, while encounters with Eastern religions, channelling and meditation encouraged the Hippie movement and its various offshoots, whose influence has continued till today. Scientific discoveries have contributed more ideas to the mix. Thus, the New Age is a fusion of many spiritual practices and ways of thought and concentrates on spiritual development outside the rigid framework of dogma or organised religion. This unit can help students to make up their own minds about the values and principles of this dynamic and constantly changing spiritual movement.
