Unit number: CSP
105
Unit title: Ethical
Teachings of the Dalai Lama
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: The Dalai Lama, as we know, is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism. This unit is a study of the Dalai Lama’s book “Ancient Wisdom, Modern World” in which he goes beyond a strictly Buddhist view to propose a set of universal principles that can lead to happiness. In doing this, the Dalai Lama distinguishes between religion (belief in one faith and its dogma) and spirituality, which is concerned with core values of the human spirit. The essence of spiritual values is concern for others’ well-being. Thus, the Dalai Lama can lead us towards principles of personal, community and international ethics which, though inspired by Buddhist principles, transcend religious boundaries. The themes explored include restraint, virtue, compassion, suffering, discernment, responsibility, peace and disarmament.
Key textbook: Gyatso, Tenzin (His Holiness the Dalai Lama). Ancient Wisdom, Modern World: Ethics for a New Millennium. London: Little, Brown & Co., 1999.
