Unit number: CSP
104
Unit title: Introduction
to Jungian Spirituality
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: The work of the great psychologist Carl Jung has had a profound influence upon 20th-century thought. Jung studied Eastern traditions, myth, alchemy, the occult, paranormal phenomena and Christianity, and developed the concepts of synchronicity and the collective unconscious. His work inspired many later thinkers within psychology, esotericism and the New Age movement. His version of psychology went beyond Freudian psychoanalysis and conventional religion to form a spiritually-based psychology that was fitted to an age of great social changes in all areas of life. This unit introduces the work of Jung in the context of spirituality, exploring in an open-minded way a selection of Jung’s ideas on Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, Christianity and the Western Magical Tradition. No previous knowledge of Jung or psychology is required for this unit.
Key textbook: Crowley, Vivianne. Principles of Jungian Spirituality. Thorsons, 1998.
