Unit title: Delivering Anger Management Training
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: Many people have difficulty in controlling their anger. Those especially at risk of stress-related anger outbursts leading to violence or damage are people with cognitive impairment. The term “cognitive impairment”, according to the World Health Organisation, denotes “any underlying loss or disturbance of basic psychological functions which may result in the person experiencing a learning disability.” This group of problems can include genetic or injury-caused brain dysfunction. Research has shown that cognitive-behavioural principles can be adopted to educate suitable individuals in anger management. The course presents a complete set of session plans for an anger management course suited to cognitive-impaired people who can benefit from learning. The clarity of the materials also make them suitable to other applications of anger management, e.g. in schools, corrective institutions, adult education, etc. The information can also be used as part of emotional intelligence education, and individual exercises can be adapted to a variety of settings.
Whilst anyone may study this unit for purely educational purposes, if you intend to apply these techniques with potentially violent people, especially offenders, you should have appropriate self-defence skills, professional training and/or available security backup and be practising in a safe setting.
