Unit number: COU 442
Unit title: M Scott Peck: People of the Lie
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This unit is a companion of the unit entitled, M. Scot Peck: The Road Less Travelled. It is an analysis of the essence of human evil, drawing on M Scott Peck’s long experiences as a psychiatrist. Many case studies are presented to illustrate his argument that religion and psychology can work together to heal the patient, although in some cases the conclusion is that some people are taken over by evil. He advocates the use of depossession or exorcism is a few cases where therapy has failed. Also examined are cases of group evil, with particular reference to the massacre at MyLai in the Vietnam War, why it happened, how it was covered up and how such episodes and other wars of folly can be avoided in the future. Topics covered include malignant narcissism and freedom of will. The ideas come from a Christian perspective but even if the student does not agree with the basic theories in this unit, it is an excellent opportunity to clarify and present one’s own ideas on the subject.
Key textbook: M. Scott Peck, People of the Lie: The Hope for Healing Human Evil, A Touchstone Book, Simon & Schuster, New York, 1983
