Unit number: COU 441
Unit title: M Scott Peck: A World Waiting to Be Born
Credit value: 3 credits
Description: This unit is a study of M. Scott Peck’s book “A World Waiting to Be Born”. The theme of the book is “civility”, a cornerstone of how humans relate to each other and defined by M. Scott Peck as “Consciously motivated organizational behaviour that is ethical in submission to a Higher Power” (p. 106, Arrow 1994 edition). Dr. Peck, in this personal, perceptive and moral study of social psychology, explores the deficiencies (or “diseases”) in the values of social relationships, whether in marriage, families, business, community or politics. The application of the concept of civility offers a means to “heal” societies of conflict through defusing their implicit misuse of power and building communities based on values, mutual respect and individual freedom.
Key textbook: Peck, M. Scott. A World Waiting to Be Born: The Search for Civility. London: Arrow Books, 1994.
Checking with Amazon.co.uk in August 2006, this book appears to be out of print. However, many second-hand copies are to be found quite cheaply via the Amazon websites and will also be found via www.abebooks.co.uk or www.abebooks.com Various editions of the book exist. Sometimes the subtitle will appear as “Civility Rediscovered” or “Rediscovering Civility”. These are all the same book and any edition will suffice for study purposes. Students should therefore have no difficulty in obtaining the book.
